OUR FALLEN BROTHERS

The following names are of Elmira Firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Fireman William Rutter - October, 1854

Fireman Charles E. Bentley - February 15, 1888

Fireman William Harrison - March 30, 1915

Fireman Dynah Monahan - May 10, 1925

Capt. Daniel Bermingham - January 11, 1939 Article Here

Fireman Henry Hesselson - November 16, 1939

Fireman Felix J. Jankowski - March 12, 1954

Lt. Joseph Hentz - January 6, 1968

The monument in the above pictures is at the Elmira Fireman's Assoc. plot in the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira. The plot was purchased in 1862 to bury fireman Joseph Up de Graf of the Torrent Hose Co., killed in the Civil War. The monument was erected in 1903 by the Exempt Fire Assoc.

The inscription reads; 

"We Labored To Save.  Our Work Is Done".

The statue is currently being repaired after suffering storm damage.
