One other aspect of
this office's job is dealing with juvenile fire setters. This program
deals with both the malicious or troubled youths caught starting fires
or children just overly curious about fire. The program consists
of a number of meetings with our education coordinator at Fire Headquarters. One visit is
usually all that is necessary for those just curious or maybe caught by
a parent playing with fire or matches. Referrals from the Police or
councilors sometimes take more sessions. The County wide referral
program known as F.Y.R.E. is designed as a fire prevention and
intervention program. It is meant to identify and deter young fire
starters before they can do any harm. Enrollment in these programs can
be voluntary with a parent or guardian's permission (and involvement) or
court-ordered.
