Retirement Dinner 2009

In May Local 709 held its annual retirement and awards dinner in Elmira. The retiree honored was Milton Oakes Jr., or as we have always known him, JR. He is a 29 year veteran who had a distinguished career with C shift and in the Inspection Bureau. Fire Fighter of the Year is FF Joe Todd. Joe's 19 year career has shown the C shift ladder truck driver to be a hard worker, a knowledgeable fire fighter and an all around go-to guy.

Rededication of Cemetery Monument

On June 14th of this year the Elmira Firefighters celebrated the 130th anniversary of the paid department with a dedication ceremony of the newly repaired monument at Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira. In attendance with the members of EFD were Mayor John Tonello, City Manager John Burin, Chamberlain David Vandermark, the members of City Council, members of Horseheads FD, Southport FD, East Hill FD,  the Penn-York Highlanders pipe and drum band, several local officials and members of our families and public.

The statue had been severely damaged in a storm more than ten years ago and almost forgotten about until a movement in the Union was started about three years ago by Gregg Dunn to restore the monument. After countless hours of work and research by several of our members the original statue now sits on a new monument that resembles the old one and all eleven head stones were replaced. The grounds around the plot were also restored.

Local 709 wishes to thank the following people for the invaluable help they gave in the restoration; Davis Herzig of Hoare Monuments, Durand van Doren, The Friends of Woodlawn and cemetery staff, Tom Henegar, Elmira Rotary Club, Steve Renko, A-Z Rentals, John Ryan, John Knapp, Rev. Jack Humphries, Steele Mem. Library, Chemung Historical Society.

2008 Retirement Dinner

The 2008 Retirement and Awards Dinner was held in May. The Firefighter of the Year Award was presented to Lieutenant Scott Temple. Scott earned the award for his leadership and medical skill in his performance at an emergency childbirth call. The Edward Kelly Award for a civilian in a life saving act was presented to Chemung County 911 dispatcher Tracy Shelton for her actions during a 911 call. Dispatcher Shelton talked a distraught woman through CPR procedures when the woman's husband suffered cardiac arrest. The woman performed CPR until Elmira Fire crews and an ambulance came on scene. The husband left the hospital four days later in good health.

The Retiree honored was Firefighter Paul Tomisman. With 35 years he retired as a long time member of A Shift and the Inspection Bureau. We wish Paul good luck in retirement and congratulations to the award winners.
